From Middle English tocraken (“to cause a cracking sound by breaking something with a lot of force; to fracture”), from Old English cracian (“to make a cracking sound, crack”), from Proto-West Germanic *krakōn (“to crack, crackle, shriek”), equivalent to to- + crack.
